A Virtual Experience
PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives has partnered with The VR Voyage to bring you an interactive, virtual tour of our temporary exhibit, on display now at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village. Accessible through any mobile or computer device, this tour allows you to explore the history of Port Coquitlam from the comfort of your home. Just follow the link provided and sit back while Museum Manager Alex Code guides you through the gallery and across the city, sharing how Port Coquitlam emerged from troubled times strengthened and on course to becoming the thriving community it is today.
Flu, Fire, Flood, and Financial Fears
The tour follows the story of a growing community as they prepared for a bright and prosperous future, only to have their resilient spirit tested in the face of four “F-words” – the Spanish Flu of 1918, a raging downtown fire in 1920, a devastating flood in 1921, and the financial crash of 1923. From the Siberian Expedition Force who arrived at the City of Port Coquitlam carrying a deadly virus, to the devastation following a fire that started in our own firehall, the tour explores the years following the city’s incorporation in 1913 through the use of artefacts, documents, photographs, and illustrated graphic panels, and will lead you to the very places in our community where these events took place.
